What is some good Jazz music out there?
I think I really like Jazz music but I'm not familiar with any of the names or band titles. Please help. I also like the "Singers and Standards" free music channel on the cable for what I get back at home, so if you're familiar with that, that's what I like as well.
The 7 previous answers covered a lot of the variety of jazz, but didn't spell some of it out for you.
Dave Brubeck was one of the earliest performers of the music that became "West Coast Swing" - I'll add Unsquare Time and 13/4 to the list of his songs.
For standards, check out the 4 albums by Rod Stewart and find the original artists for the ones you like. Several artists have released "Great American Standards" and "Tribute" albums to various singers and song writers. Willie Nelson's Star Dust album was the first ever to go "Quadruple Platinum" and is still available. More recently, Danny Aiello, John Tesh, and former rocker Michael Bolton released American Standard albums. Even Renee Olstead, better known as the teenage daughter on still standing has released a couple albums of "standards".

Give her 20 years of experience and she'll be unbelievable. But considering her youth, her performances are still amazing.
One easy and free way to search out and sample a variety of jazz is by logging on to Pandora.com and start creating 100 unique stations, starting each with a different favorite song or artist.
For some of the earliest swing music, check out Benny Goodman. His 1938 Carnegie Hall concert established "swing" as it's own branch of jazz. Other top early bands include Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey together and separately, along with Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald became the "front man" for her band when the previous leader passed on. Gene Krupa, Stan Kenton, Harry James, and Artie Shaw will give you a well rounded collection of pure swing.
One of the early branches of jazz was Boogie Woogie - Search for Will Bradley and you may be fortunate enough to find his "Beat Me Daddy, Eight to the Bar". Other BW songs include "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy", "Chattanoog Choo Choo", and Pennsylvania 6-5000.
