Why are Latin Americans different than Latinos in the US when it comes to music?

Here in the States Latinos like a lot reageton and hip hop but I noticed that while a lot of Latin Americans in South America like those two music groups as well, Latin Rock/Punk is king. Latin Rock seems to be the biggest musical taste among Latin American college students and youth. I can understand why, I mean Mexican and Argentine rock bands are really, really, good.
It's weird because here I was used to Latinos listening to nothing but rap, but my cousins in Mexico listen to nothing but rock music, punk and pop, and only like rap or reageton at the club. I noticed this is how it is for a lot of the youth in Latin America. Why is that?

possibly because the people you hung out with when visiting latin america were more sophisticated and urbane than the people who emigrated to the US. the latter came here mostly because they don't have enough jobs in those countries, especially for the uneducated. the former are probably more educated and have been able to find lives in those countries.

Latin American countries are more classicist than the US and if you'd hung out with the "lower" (sorry but this reality) classes you would have heard plenty of their music. Rap may be a purely N. American phenomenon which hasn't caught on down there -- they have other forms of popular music (banda, nortena, ranchera, etc)
